Two St. Louis police officers were wounded Wednesday afternoon when shot by a suspect in a homicide incident. Reportedly, one of the wounded officers has ties to Fayette County.

St. Louis Metropolitan Police Chief John Hayden said one of the officers had been shot in the leg and the other in the abdomen.

The condition of the officer shot in the abdomen was critical Wednesday afternoon.

Chief Hayden said the officers were attempting to apprehend a suspect wanted in a homicide investigation when the suspects opened fire on the officers. Officers returned fire, hitting a suspect who later died of his wounds. Two additional suspects were arrested after a foot pursuit.

There are reports that the officer in more critical condition is from the Vandalia area.

Chief Hayden said it's a "rough time" for law enforcement. He said, "It is just tough; they (the officers) are doing everything they can to keep people safe and these critical incidents keep happening."
