Effingham city council members this week approved work toward extending Ford Avenue to the east another 450 feet.

The City has a goal of extending Ford as far east as North 4th Street, but this would get the ball rolling. The Council approved purchasing a certificate of dedication of right-of-way for public street and utility purposes from D and A Farms, and purchase of property for utility purposes.

City Director of Public Works Jeremy Heuerman said the purchase involves a new alignment for the easterly extension of Ford.

When the extension is constructed, it will include sidewalks, a turn lane and bike lanes.

The Council also approved a plat of Butcher Block Subdivision, the former site of John Boos and Company at Willow and Fayette. The property was platted with five lots, one of which will house the new Homewood Grill building. The north part of the property is being retained as it might be needed when Fayette Avenue is reconstructed.

Heuerman reported that the City and County have landed additional Federal funds on two projects. The City will receive $20,000 to $25,000 for the planned extension of Thies Avenue in the area of the new John Boos and Company. The project will help Boos in their upcoming expansion, but will also help provide access to City-owned property next door for economic development. Meanwhile, the Council will receive $40,000 to $45,000 for improvements to Airport Road. The work will assist Hetzel's Overland Transport, which has developed a large complex north across from Effingham County Memorial Airport.

Council members also received encouraging news regarding the Wonderland in Lights display at Community Park. City Tourism Director Jodi Thoele said 7,000 vehicles have been through the display and that $18,000 in donations have been received that are plowed back into the display.
