We mentioned in a story last week that Effingham Unit 40 school district plans to add three School Improvement Days to the school year calendar.

On Monday, Unit 40 Superintendent Mark Doan shared more about why it's felt that the additions are a good idea. Here's what he shared:

"Effingham Unit #40 Family:

As we continue to move forward with the 2021-22 school year, we can say this is one of the most challenging times in the history of education. The District recognizes that stress levels throughout Unit #40 are an area of concern.

The District wishes to support the mental wellbeing of both students, educators and staff on a daily basis. Ongoing conversations have occurred and it is clear that time is the resource that is needed right now. Time to rest and renew. Therefore, the District will be making the following alterations to the 2021-22 school calendar:

Friday, December 17th – School Improvement Day (student release at 12:00 p.m.)

Friday, February 4th – School Improvement Day (student release at 12:00 p.m.)

Friday, March 18th – School Improvement Day (student release at 12:00 p.m.)

The Unit #40 Board of Education and Administration care deeply about the mental wellbeing of our learning community. Our students, faculty, staff, and parents/guardians have worked tirelessly to persevere during these trying times. The extended break will give time to focus on self-care and family. Thank you."

Sincerely,

Mark E. Doan, Superintendent

Effingham Unit #40
