Lower Jobless Rates Reported in Every County in September

Lower unemployment rates were reported in every area county in September.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security reported the jobless rate for September in Effingham County was 3.3%. That's down from an even 5% in September 2020. 

Total nonfarm employment in the Effngham area increased by 800 compared to last year. Employment gains were posted in Educational and Health Services (+150), Leisure and Hospitality (+125), Government (+125), Construction (+100), Information (+75), Manufacturing (+75),  Other Services (+50), and Professional and Business Services (+50).

No employment changes were reported in Natural Resources and Mining, Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, and Financial Activities.

Here are the area county unemployment numbers for September, compared to September 2020:

Coles--4.3%, down from 6.8%

Cumberland--3.4%, down from 4.5%

Shelby--3.6%, down from 5.2%

Clay--4.9%, down from 6.8%

Fayette--4.2%, down from 6.2%

Jasper--3.6%, down from 4.8%

The statewide jobless rate for September was 5.5%, well down from 10.1% in September 2020.
