The Altamont City Council has finalized plans for a residential subdivision development on the south edge of the city.

The property measures approximately 33 acres and is located on the west side of the Altamont/Farina blacktop between the interstate and Frederking Subdivision.

The tract is in the City of Altamont's second tax increment financing district.

The Altamont Council also discussed a preliminary plat of South Point Subdivision. The parcel totals 10 acres and will involve 16 residential lots with a cul-de-sac on the west end and lots on each side of the street. The City will market the lots, which should be ready for development in the spring or summer of 2022.

Also, the Altamont Council rezoned property owned by the Altamont Fire Protection District at 207 North 3rd Street to commercial. The rezoning would allow the fire department to build on the lot for use for fire service activity.

Council members got an update from Cory Pals on work to deal with a mole infestation in Gilbert Park. The Altamont Lions Club soccer program is trying to deal with the problem, which has also caused problems on the grounds Altamont Grade School. McGinnis Wildlife has done some trapping and plans to do more and the City has sprayed the property for grubs, which attract the moles to the property.

Altamont council members also approved repairs to the transformers at the city's electric plant for $34,620, and approved a $128,654.99 expenditure for general liability and workers compensation insurance coverage, which is the same amount as the previous year.

At an earlier meeting, the Altamont Council approved the appointment of Altamont Chamber Board President Dawn Burrow and Lea Stuckemeyer of Peoples Bank and Trust to the Altamont/Effingham County Enterprise Zone Board.
