Yesterdays Pub Fire

Fire destroyed a Newton landmark overnight.

The fire was reported at Yesterday's Pub on the north side of the Courthouse square at 107 West Jourdan. Wade Fire District Chief Gary Lindemann said the call came at 12:02am Tuesday, and the initial call indicated a woman was still on the second floor of the structure.

Lindemann said firefighters found heavy fire coming out of the southwest corner of the building. While firefighters entered the building, the woman was able to get out of the back of the structure. Wade Command went to a box alarm that pulled in Greenup Fire and Teutopolis Fire with towers and Olney Fire with a snorkel truck. The box alarm also pulled in Oblong, Dieterich, Casey, Robinson and Montrose fire departments with engines. Crooked Creek Fire Protection District was called to cover the Wade station. Jasper County EMS was on scene to provide medical care. Newton Police Department and Jasper County Sheriff's Department were assisted by the Jasper County Emergency Management Agency for traffic control.

Lindemann said all occupants were checked out and released. The fire is currently under investigation. Wade Fire cleared the scene at 6am Monday.
