As students and staff prepare to return to school, the Effingham County Health Department would like to remind the community that the wearing of masks by unvaccinated individuals and the continuation of mitigation strategies is very important to reduce the spread of COVID in the community. The Department is reporting that they are beginning to see an increase in positive cases and that the Delta variant is present in the county.

The following prevention strategies in the updated “Guidance for COVID-19 Prevention in K-12 Schools” from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are recommended:

• Promoting vaccination

• Consistent and correct mask use

• Physical distancing

• Screening testing to promptly identify cases, clusters, and outbreaks

• Ventilation

• Handwashing and respiratory etiquette

• Staying home when sick and getting tested

• Contact tracing, in combination with isolation and quarantine

• Cleaning and disinfection
