Today is Don Koonce's last official day on the job as Shelby County Sheriff.

(RETIRING SHELBY COUNTY SHERIFF DON KOONCE)

Koonce submitted a letter of retirement to the Shelby County Board earlier this month, indicating that today would be his final day as sheriff. In the letter, Koonce indicated the changes in police reform in Illinois reaffirmed his decision to step down.

Shelby County State's Attorney Nichole Kroncke said that Undersheriff Sean McQueen would take over as sheriff for up to 60 days. In that time, the Shelby County Democrat Central Committee will recommend a successor to Koonce. The Shelby County Board will vote on the formal replacement for Koonce.
