The Illinois State Police Zone 7 Investigations has been asked by Mt. Vernon Police Department to assist with an officer-involved shooting involving a Mt. Vernon police officer.

Mt. Vernon police responded to a call of an armed robbery at 2:43am at a gas station. A preliminary investigation indicates the Mt. Vernon officer encountered an individual who matched the description of the suspect involved in the armed robbery. As the police officer approached the suspect, 55-year-old Fredrick Goss of Mt. Vernon, Goss fled on foot, with the officer in pursuit, also on foot. During the foot chase, gunfire was exchanged between Goss and the officer. Goss was struck by gunfire. He was taken for treatment of what were termed non life threatening injuries. The officer was not injured.

Police say a firearm was recovered at the scene, along with evidence relating to the armed robbery.
