Memorial Day ceremonies took place throughout the nation and the area over the weekend, including the annual observance Monday in Altamont.

Loads of Altamont residents and visitors to town lined the parade route that stretched from Altamont Community High School to Union Cemetery on the north edge of town. Dalyne Sapp, the last surviving sibling of Keith Tipsword of Moccasin, who was killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor, served as Parade Marshal.

The observance at the cemetery, which was organized by Altamont VFW Post #7676, featured remarks from the speaker, our own Greg Sapp, an invocation and benediction from Pastor Marcus Manley of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the playing of "Taps" and a 21-gun salute, along with music from the Altamont Community High School Marching Indians.

Thanks to Kurt Becker for photos from the ceremony. Kurt has several more photos posted on his Facebook page. Our thanks to his letting us use some of those photos.
