Effingham Unit 40 school board members Monday interviewed candidates for a vacancy on the board.

The vacancy emerged when only two people ran for the three seats available on the board in the April election. The new board member could be seated at the regular monthly meeting next Monday night.

Meanwhile, several other personnel moves were approved. That includes hiring Zach Slifer as summer seasonal help on the maintenance crew and Joyce Anderson as a three-hour cook at the junior high school. Transfers were also approved; Tina Haarmann as head custodian at the high school, Liz Budde as a 7-1/2 hour cook at Central, and Pansy Limes as a four-hour cashier at the junior high school. Also hired was Delaney VanDoren as an elementary teacher at South Side for the coming school year.

These appointments were approved: Megan Tylka and Julie Flack as student council sponsors at the high school, Micaela Chrappa as 8th grade volleyball coach, and Lisa Sigg as high school basketball head cheer sponsor.

Resignations were accepted from Deb Kirby as a cook, Mariah Tabbert as a teacher at South Side, Colton Booher as a basketball coach and baseball coach, and Tommy O'Brien as freshman boys basketball coach. A retirement was approved for Mary Altgilbers as a bus driver. Leaves of absence were granted Heather King and Kierstyn Green.

The Board also purchased a new Grades K-5 Math series from HMH for $287,763.14. A Grades 6-12 Math series was purchased earlier, along with a Grades 6-12 Family and Consumer Sciences series and a Grades 6-12 Health series.

Superintendent Mark Doan said training on the new Math series will start next week.
