The City of Effingham is in better financial shape following receipt of Federal CARES Act funds.

The City received a little over $500,000 in funds, which will go toward salaries of city police officers and firefighters.

City Administrator Steve Miller said Thursday that having those funds will mean funds that otherwise would have paid those salaries could be used for other purposes, including $2.1 million in deferred projects, involving street resurfacing, sidewalk construction, and curb and gutter work. Vehicle and equipment replacement could also be undertaken.

The City Council will meet March 23 for a budget session, as the City's new fiscal year begins May 1.
