Former Congressman Glenn Poshard said he and his wife Jo are disturbed by the tenor of the discussions heard and seen on social media. That led him to begin a series of peaceful marches in each county he represented while serving in the US Congress.

Poshard visited Effingham Monday morning, and headed to Shelbyville Monday afternoon.

At the Effingham stop, we asked Poshard to discuss his reasons for the marches...

Poshard referred to Lincoln during his remarks. He referred to a speech Lincoln gave in Springfield in 1838, while he was a state legislator. Lincoln said, "If destruction be our lot, we must be the author and finisher." It's a reference to America's geographic isolation from the rest of the world. Poshard noted that 25 years after Lincoln made the speech, the Civil War began.

He also referred to Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address, when many on hand to hear his address came wanting to hear about retribution for the South for the rebellion. Instead, Lincoln spoke of "malice toward none, and charity for all".

Poshard also shared remarks of President John F. Kennedy in his Inaugural Address that "as long as there is inequality, and as long as there are those who are denied life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, our work is unfinished."

Poshard and the group of local citizens who joined him took a walk around the old Courthouse three times in a show of unity.
