(MATTOON FIREFIGHTERS WERE ABLE TO BRING A FIRE ON THE ROOF OF NEAL HALL AT LAKE LAND COLLEGE UNDER CONTROL FAIRLY QUICKLY TUESDAY AFTERNOON)

Fire damaged some of the roof on Neal Hall on the Lake Land College campus Tuesday afternoon.

Mattoon firefighters were called to the scene at 2:50pm. An isolated section of the roof was involved. The roof is being replaced. The contractors who were working on the roofing project escaped from the building without injury.

There were initial concerns about the fire as the windy conditions carried loads of smoke into the air. Firefighters, though, were able to bring the fire under control fairly quickly.

Lake Land spokesperson Kelly Allee said there were no students or staff on campus when the fire occurred. The campus remains on Level 3 Restricted Access to all staff and students without prior approval due to COVID-19.

Crews were working to determine the cause of the fire and assessing the damage.

Neal Hall houses a nursing lab, 2-D and 3-D art labs, a music classroom, a biology lab and greenhouse, an Earth Science lab, and general education classrooms.
