Where can Effingham High School students get tasty treats and provide learning opportunities for fellow young people?

It's the Heartbeats Cafe.

The eatery is operated by special needs students at EHS under the watchful eye of teacher Lindsay Westendorf. The classroom is an opportunity for students to serve refreshments and take and give change. It's also a chance for interaction with other students and to develop interpersonal skills.

A variety of eats and drinks are available, which are handy for EHS students needing a boost. The school utilized the former WEHS area to serve as the space for the cafe.

Heartbeats Cafe was part of the presentation made to the Illinois Director of Innovation during a visit to EHS last week.
