A police pursuit following shots being fired resulted in a crash Friday night.

St. Elmo Police Officer Brian Roedl had parked in an area near the I-70 interchange at St. Elmo just after 6pm in case of weather-related crashes. A vehicle pulled off the interstate across from the squad car along Interstate Drive and Roedl observed shots being fired from the vehicle. Roedl attempted to stop the vehicle, but the vehicle fled from the scene, and Roedl gave pursuit as the units headed westbound on the interstate.

The suspect vehicle was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control of the unit on an overpass near Brownstown and struck the guardrail. The suspect vehicle ended up partially in the passing lane and facing in the wrong direction. Roedl attempted to stop and avoid the suspect vehicle, but the roadway was slick due to the weather and Roedl's squad car struck the suspect vehicle and the guardrail.

One male fled on foot from the suspect vehicle and into some brush, but Fayette County sheriff's deputies reaching the scene gave pursuit and apprehended the man who fled.

A juvenile male is believed to have been driving the suspect vehicle and was taken into custody along with the individual who fled the scene, 19-year-old Cliff Edwards of Centreville. Both the juvenile and Edwards were taken to Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia where they were treated. Officer Roedl was also taken to Fayette County Hospital for treatment and was later released.

SHOTS FIRED

The firearm and casings were recovered. The juvenile male remains in custody while the incident remains under investigation. Arrest information is pending.
