A group protesting the removal of a cross from the mural on the Raney Street overpass were present at Effingham City Hall Saturday afternoon.

The group identified as Edgewood IL Flag Fliers on Facebook numbered about 20, and were at City Hall for a couple of hours, protesting the possible removal from the overpass of a cross from the mural. A Madison, Wisconsin organization called Freedom from Religion Foundation has notified City Hall it was contacted by a local resident about the cross. The mural is on the City-owned overpass. City officials say they had no idea a cross would be included on the mural.

The Effingham City Council will meet Tuesday at 5pm at City Hall. There is no item on the agenda regarding the mural, but some local residents have signed up to speak on the issue.
