A car and semi collided south of Effingham Friday afternoon.

The crash happened at 3:33pm on I-57 northbound, five miles south of Effingham. State police report a semi driven by 63-year-old Timothy Sean Murphy of Richardson, Texas, and a car driven by 24-year-old Xitlali Noemi Olguin Galindo of Dallas, Texas were northbound. The left rear of the semi trailer struck the passenger door of the car as she was passing in the left lane.

Galindo's car left the roadway to the left, and crossed over both lanes of southbound I-57. The car then entered the west ditch of I-57 southbound where the vehicle struck multiple trees on the west side of the interstate and came to rest.

Galindo was airlifted from the scene to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. A three-year-old passenger in Galindo's car was transported to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham for treatment of what were termed minor injuries.

No charges have been filed; the case is still under investigation.

Traffic on southbound I-57 was stopped or slowed for some time after the crash.
