Bids from four vendors were received Thursday on work to modernize the elevator in the Effingham County Office Building.

The elevator has broken down twice this year, and the Board decided to retrofit the unit.

Effingham County Chief Deputy Sheriff Paul Kuhns said the bids range from just over $94,000 to just under $118,000. The bids were received from the current elevator maintainer, Kone, based in Springfield, along with Otis Elevator in Springfield, All Rise of St. Charles, Missouri, and Thyssen Krupp of Evansville, Indiana.

Kuhns said the goal is a conversion of the elevator from analog to digital controllers, although it will still be a hydraulic elevator. Another consideration, Kuhns said, is that each of the bids involve some work done by others, not self-contained projects, so it will take some time to decide which is the best bid.

Kuhns hopes to make a decision by January 2nd on a recommendation to the County Board.
