One Killed, Two Injured in Marion County Crash

One person was killed and two others were injured in a crash in Marion County Wednesday night.

The crash happened just after 7pm on Illinois Route 37 at Tonti Road, north of Salem.

Illinois State Police report a car driven by 38-year-old Brandy Smith of Salem was stopped at the intersection, then pulled into the intersection and turned in front of a vehicle driven by 66-year-old Leo Murphy of Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. The units collided head-on.

Murphy was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. A passenger in the Murphy vehicle, 67-year-old Virginia Murphy of Salem, was injured and was taken to Salem Hospital, then transferred to St. Louis University Hospital.

Smith was injured and was taken to Salem Hospital, and then on to St. Louis University Hospital.

Charges are pending on completion of the investigation of the crash.
