Dieterich village board members this week discussed securing railroad gates for the Main Street crossing.

Village Clerk Brittny Gipson said the issue was discussed at the previous meeting, and Board members asked her to arrange a meeting with the interested parties. A meeting followed with village officials, as well as representatives of the Illinois Department of Transportation, CN Railroad and the Illinois Commerce Commission.

A concern is the odd angle of the crossing to the street and how that could be addressed. Subsequent meetings are expected.

There was also discussion about the traffic signals at the intersection of Main Street and Illinois Route 33, known as Center Street in Dieterich. There are concerns that when a lower-profile vehicle stops behind a semi the driver can't see the stoplight. The plan is to add stoplight arms that will extend to the side to make the signals easier to see.

The Board also discussed golf carts, which are legal to use in the village, but require a $50 annual registration fee.

Some who have purchased carts since the first of the year think their fee should be pro-rated. The village's attorney will research the matter.

The Board acted on a fiscal year tax levy totaling $54,785, up 5% from the previous year.

Gipson was also recognized for having completed 10 years' service to the Village.
