The Illinois Enterprise Zone Board has approved 14 applications to establish or renew enterprise zones to go into effect in 2020. That includes a Coles County Enterprise Zone, as well as Robinson and Crawford County, and Salem and Marion County.

Enterprise Zones are designed to encourage job growth and investment in economically depressed areas. Companies within a zone, or that agree to move into one, may qualify for tax incentives that include sales tax exemptions on purchases of building mateials, an investment tax credit, and in some instances on utility taxes. Each zone is administered by a local official under rules set by the State.

There are 97 enterprise zones located across Illinois. Once designated, an area may remain an Enterprise Zone for 15 years, with a review by the Enterprise Zone Board after 13 years for a possible 10-year extension of the zone designation.

These Enterprise Zones have been approved and will go into effect on January 1, 2020:

--American Bottoms

--Carbondale/Murphysboro/Jackson County

--Coles County

--Franklin County I-57

--Hamilton-Wayne County

--Jacksonville Regional

--Monroe-Randolph County

--Montgomery County

--Northwest Illinois

--Robinson-Crawford County

--Salem and Marion County

--West Regional

--Western Hoffman Estates

--Zion Benton

The Effingham City-County Enterprise Zone has been in place since 1988.
