The crash occurred at 10 am on Thursday, August 15 on the US Route 45 interchange with I-57/70. Police say a vehicle pulling a trailer driven by 33-year-old Tommy Beard II of Olney struck a semi driven by 28-year-old Michael Hawkins of Hindsboro. The collision resulted in an explosion.

The impact of the collision caused Hawkins' semi to strike a semi driven by 51-year-old Mohamud Ahmed of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Effingham firefighters handled two fires at the scene. Both vehicles caught fire and diesel fuel spilled into the interstate ditch and caught fire.

No one was injured. Beard was cited for disobeying a traffic control device. The Mile Post 162 on and off-ramps were both closed as was Route 45 north and south at the scene for more than two hours.
