Overheated bearings caused airbags on the axles of a semi trailer to explode Friday morning, resulting in a call by authorities to Keller Drive.

Effingham Assistant Fire Chief Matt Kulesza said some newer model semi trailers have airbags on the axles to make for a smoother ride. Kulesza said the overheated axle bearings exploded the airbags. The truck driver heard the explosion, pulled into the turn lane on Keller in front of TGI Friday's, and summoned authorities.

There was concern the explosion could have been in the cargo in the semi trailer, which was hauling paint. Effingham City Fire and Police officers were on scene along with Illinois State Police.

Once the cause of the explosion was determined, the semi was hauled off into a parking area until further examination of the rig could take place. The unit was then headed for a truck repair business.

The incident occurred just after 8am and briefly blocked both northbound lanes of Keller in that area.
