A group of law enforcement officers from the area headed from Effingham Wednesday morning, carrying a torch destined for the Illinois Special Olympics State Games. The event will take place this weekend at Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal.

The Torch Run has featured participants from Illinois State Police, Effingham County Sheriff's Department and other agencies through the years. The torch was brought to Effingham Tuesday by officers from Jasper County Sheriff's Department and Newton Police Department.

The Effingham contingent carried the torch through Neoga and to Mattoon, on its way to Bloomington.

Members of the Effingham Lightning Special Olympics organization were present when the torch left Effingham and helped carry the torch the first few blocks from the south side of the Courthouse Museum to the Effingham Post Office where the law enforcement participants took over and headed north.
