Memorial Day 2019 stayed dry, allowing for observances throughout the area Monday.

That included the annual ceremony at the Veterans Memorial in Oakridge Cemetery.

Disabled American Veterans Chapter 7 and Ladies Auxiliary served as the host organization. Chapter Commander Dave Althoff served as Master of Ceremonies.

Gold Star Mothers Lynn Donaldson and Kathy Sayne were noted and Lucas Shelley offered the invocation and delivered the benediction.

Tyler Koester and Andrew Bell of the Illinois National Guard unit of Effingham oversaw the raising of the colors, and Pat and Julie Zuber shared a rendition of the National Anthem.

The various service organizations presented memorial wreaths, and the Teutopolis High School band shared patriotic selections. Bill Copple oversaw the honor guard that presented a 21-gun salute, and Alex Jefferies played "Taps". Effingham Elks Post #1016 displayed their giant American flag.

Navy veteran Missy Koester served as guest speaker, reflecting on her service as part of detachments working at military funerals and at the funerals of veterans. She said she knew she would continue participating in Memorial Day observances once she returned home to Effingham.

The same ceremony was immediately re-enacted after the assemblage relocated to Woodlawn Cemetery.
