The Effingham Public Library Board annually looks at a fundraising campaign and a beneficary for the proceeds.

The board discussed early literacy opportunities at this week's meeting.

Library Director Amanda McKay said they'd like to enhance the opportunities for early learning. McKay said, "The literacy rate of 4th graders is not great; in fact in Effingham County the rate is below the national average." She said that information was uncovered during a survey conducted in recent years by the Effingham County Health Department.

McKay said such problems for young ones don't track well as far as future development. One project being considered to address the problem is 1000 Books Before Kindergarten, a goal for young readers. We will keep you up-to-date as the effort grows.

The library board also considered a longer-range goal, that being utilization of more space in the library building for children. McKay said there are many days when more space for kids would be welcomed, even with a new and larger library facility. An expansion of the children's area, according to McKay, could happen within the next five years.
