Effingham Unit 40 school board members Monday voted to award the work to renovate Effingham Junior High School.

The total estimated cost is $14,562,893. The base bid makes up the lion's share of that total. The base bid totals $10,967,354. That includes $3,388,000 in carpentry work by Poettker Construction; $540,675 in roofing and sheet metal work by Advance Commercial; $1,068,160 in windows and storefronts by Arrow Glass; $891,606 in metal studs and drywall from Von Alst Construction; $1,108,863 in plumbing services from DHM Construction; $2,534,400 in HVAC services from Merz Air Conditioning and Heating; and $1,435,650 in electrical services from Anderson Electric.

Add to that, $350,219 in alternates including some painting work, low voltage wiring work, window shades, and basement bathrooms. The asbestos abatement work awarded earlier cost $1.1 million, the Construction Management contract cost just over $1 million, and the contract with FGM Architects totaled just over $1 million.

Some alternates not recommended at this time include work on the main entrance and rotunda, work on the gym and south entrances, a new PA/clock/speaker system, a fitness area, and work in a second floor bathroom. Those alternates would have added more than half a million dollars more to the cost.

The project will be completed over the coming three summers, necessitating lengthier summers this year and two years from now.

In other business Monday, the Unit 40 board purchased eight JTouch Plus devices for South Side School at a total cost of just over $16,000. It was also agreed to purchase components to rebuild 305 desktop computers. The District will save over $300 per unit as opposed to buying new units, a total estimated savings of more than $90,000.

It was also voted to purchase 45 new ProBooks for Central School; to buy a new walk-in freezer at South Side for just under $17,000, and to purchase two ice machines for the high school cafeteria for just under $9,800.
