Cleanup continues after a leak of diesel exhaust fluid from Pilot Truck Stop on Effingham's north side into a local waterway.

Effingham Fire Department Captain J.R. Nieman said the leak was discovered either Saturday night or early Sunday morning. The fluid made its way to a small creek that runs south of Pilot under the interstate and travels south under Evergreen Avenue and along Park Hills Subdivision.

There's enough water in the creek to keep the fluid moving downstream. Cleanup crews have placed bags in the creek to soak up the fluid and slow its progress downstream.

Meanwhile, Nieman said crews are still working to stop any more release of the fluid from the tank at Pilot, including vacuuming the fluid out of the underground storage tank under the parking lot to the east of the truck stop.
