The Watson Fire Protection District recently completed a hydraulic extrication tool replacement project. The project consisted of replacing the entire extrication tool set on the district’s primary response vehicle for motor vehicle accidents. The tools that were replaced were almost 16 years old, which meant their effectiveness was greatly reduced due to antiquated technology.

The District purchased a new cutter, spreader and ram, all of which use battery powered technology. The battery powered tools allow for greater mobility and eliminates the use of a gasoline powered engine and hoses. These tools will allow the District to be more prepared to deal with the latest automobile technology and high strength steels being used to manufacture today’s vehicles.

To assist with funding the purchase of the tools, the District applied for a Mary Heath Foundation grant in late 2018. On December 13, 2018, the District was awarded $7,800 from the Mary Heath Foundation. This award allowed the District to purchase the three tools in one year, rather than spreading their purchase out over multiple budget years.

District personnel have participated in multiple training sessions, involving varying scenarios, to allow them to become familiar with the tools. The entire tool set is now in service and ready to use when called upon.
