The local Operation Christmas Child effort collected more than 10,000 shoeboxes for distribution to kids around the world.

The shoebox collection concluded Monday. Central Drop Off Team Leader Sandy Wilson said the Effingham team, headquartered at Cornerstone Christian Church at 3600 South Banker, received 2,810 shoeboxes over the past 10 days.

The Effingham Central Drop Off also serves five Drop Off centers including Vandalia, Greenville, Fillmore, Sumner and Robinson. Those centers brought cartons of shoeboxes totaling 7,615, which brings the total number of shoeboxes collected this year to 10,425.

The shoeboxes will be taken to the processing center in Boone, North Carolina for distribution to more than 100 countries worldwide.

Operation Christmas Child is a project of the international relief organization Samaritan's Purse.
