The Effingham Fire Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Paid-On-Call Firefighter. The fire department has five paid on call firefighter positions to be filled in this budget year. The application process is being coordinated by Second Assistant Chief Jim Wolters and Second Lieutenant Howard Janis. Wolters has served the department for nearly 50 years and Janis has served the community for nearly 30 years as paid on call firefighters.

Paid-On-Call Firefighter applications can be obtained at the Central Station, 505 West Fayette Avenue and at Effingham City Hall 201 East Jefferson Street. In addition to completing the application, interested persons in the Paid-On-Call Firefighter position will be subject to a mandatory orientation session to be held on November 7, successful completion of a physical agility test on November 10 followed by an interview process on November 11 and 12. Candidates must also successfully complete a Physical Exam provided by the Fire Department Physician.

Second Assistant Chief Jim Wolters has been a member of the Effingham Fire Department for nearly 50 years and relates that serving the community as a Paid on Call Firefighter is both extremely rewarding and challenging – “you make friends for life” as a firefighter, as well as serving with a great group of men and women.

Applications are to be returned to the City Clerk’s Office, 201 East Jefferson Street - the deadline for submitting applications is 4PM November 6th.
