Some folks in Effingham don't enjoy it when their neighbors burn their leaves and yard waste in the fall, but maybe those neighbors don't think they have another option.

They do.

The Effingham County Waste Management Committee Tuesday discussed the option available to city residents of having their leaves and yard waste picked up by Landfill 33.

Brian Hayes of Landfill 33, a member of the Waste Management Committee, said his firm will pick up the yard waste if residents will bag it and pay a nominal fee. Hayes said there are bags available at most retail locations that can be used for the chore. If you phone Landfill 33, they will come and pick up the bags.

There was discussion of collecting recyclables. Hayes said "it's challenging to get some numbers" on the cost of recycling, but said there is still demand for the materials.

Hayes also said he is "still committed" to building a building to house various recyclables.

There was also brief discussion on enacting a county tipping fee. Committee Chairman John Perry said "we really need to have breakdown as to what we're going to spend the revenue on" before the fee is determined.

Sarah Ruholl-Sehy of Effingham Recycles was present. That organization will next meet this Thursday. If you're interested in joining that group, email her at sruholl@gmail.com to obtain an invitation to attend.

The committee set its quarterly meeting schedule for 2019. Dates are the third Tuesday; January 15, April 16, July 16, and October 15, at 2pm.
