Altamont resident Jerold Jones has been convicted on various sex offenses stemming from actions against a 14-year-old girl.

An Effingham County jury Thursday found the 47-year-old Jones guilty of two counts of indecent solicitation of a child and a charge of  aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Jones was arrested in 2017. Reports at the time indicated the girl approached Jones in response to a possible job opportunity. She reportedly went with Jones in a vehicle, but when they pulled up to a local motel and Jones got out to register for a room, the girl got out of the vehicle and escaped with the help of a family member.

Jones was convicted in Indiana and served prison time for child pornography, and is a registered sex offender.

Effingham County State's Attorney Bryan Kibler said Jones faces a maximum of 10 years in prison, and said the sentence could be longer once his conviction in Indiana is taken into consideration.

Jones' sentencing hearing is set for December 6.
