Two Olney residents were arrested in Altamont Tuesday on drug charges.

50-year-old James Shadowens, Sr. and 49-year-old Melisha Goble were each charged with unlawful possession of methamphetamine, a Class 3 felony offense punishable by up to two to five years in prison.

Shadowens was also charged with a Class 2 felony count of disarming a peace officer. That offense is punishable by three to seven years in prison.

Effingham County State's Attorney Bryan Kibler said Shadowens and Goble were taken into custody by Altamont police for allegedly being in possession of meth. Kibler said Shadowens is alleged to have attempted to flee but when confronted by a police officer attempted to take the officer's service weapon. A member of the public assisted the officer in subduing Shadowens and taking him into custody.

Shadowens' bond was set Wednesday by Judge Kimberly Koester at $50,000. He is next due in court on January 18. Goble was released on her own recognizance with her next court appearance set for February 13.
