Multiple Vehicle Fatal Crash on Interstate 64

A multiple vehicle fatal crash occurred at the Interstate 64 westbound, mile post 85, rest area in Jefferson County Sunday at 9:55 a.m.

A 75-year-old male from Knotts Island, North Carolina was observed entering the rest area at a high rate of speed and traveling on and off the roadway, striking several trees. He then traveled onto the parking lot of the rest area and struck a parked vehicle.

The high speed impact caused both vehicles to become immediately engulfed in flames. Both vehicles and the travel trailer were completely destroyed by the fire.

The rest area was closed for approximately 10 hours during the incident. The driver of Unit 1 was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger of Unit 1, a 75-year-old female from Knotts Island, N.C. was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon and then airlifted to a St. Louis area hospital with major injuries. Both names are being withheld pending family notification.

The driver of the second unit, Patrick Outler, 47, of Chandler, Ind. and his passenger Jacqueline Outler, 47, of Chandler, Ind. were transported to Crossroads Hospital in Mount Vernon with minor injuries. The Illinois State Police are continuing to investigate the crash.
