Fayette County authorities and the Illinois State Police are investigating a fatal incident Monday morning involving a semi striking a bicycle east of St. Elmo.

Illinois State Police say the crash occurred at 6:20am, just east of St. Elmo along US Route 40.

Killed in the crash was 30-year old Jason Hearty of Altamont.

State Police say their preliminary investigation shows Hearty was traveling westbound on Route 40, traveling to his workplace in St. Elmo, when his bicycle was struck by an unknown semi truck that left the scene. Hearty was pronounced dead at the scene by Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen at 7am.

Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Officers and ISP Crime Scene Investigators are continuing to investigate the fatal crash, along with the Fayette County Coroner's Office. A witness gave authorities a description of the rig involved, and Fayette County authorities say a semi matching the description of the semi was spotted near Highland earlier this morning.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine the cause of death.
