Teutopolis Athletic Director and Assistant High School Principal Andrew Johnson has been hired as the next superintendent of the Jasper Unit 1 School District at Newton.

The Jasper Board of Education hired Johnson Thursday night, and gave Johnson a five-year contract.

Johnson will succeed interim superintendent Marilyn Holt, who has been serving since last fall after Dan Cox's departure to become superintendent of the Staunton school district.

Johnson is in his seventh year in the Teutopolis school district, having been there since 2009. He came to Teutopolis from the Marissa school district where he had worked for more than 13 years.

Johnson was recently honored with the Illinois Assistant Principal of the Year award from Horace Mann and the Illinois Principals Association. He said Thursday that his resignation would likely be considered by the Teutopolis board at their April meeting.
