St. Sen. Kyle McCarter will announce Wednesday that he will challenge incumbent John Shimkus for the Republican nomination for 15th District Congressman in 2016.

McCarter, who like Shimkus is from the Metro East area, has served in the State Senate since 2009, when he was appointed to succeed Frank Watson after Watson suffered a stroke. He considered a run for statewide office in 2014 before deciding to seek re-election.

Shimkus has served in Congress since 1996.

McCarter will be in Effingham to formally declare his candidacy for Congress at 11am Wednesday at Effingham Public Library.

A blog by a writer for Roll Call, the congressional reporting website, talks about McCarter's run.
