Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen said he will not seek re-election as coroner in 2016.

Bowen said he was planning to run for a fifth term, but said a Fayette County Board member phoned him while he was on vacation and, according to Bowen, accused the coroner of "things that were totally untrue." Bowen said he cleared up the situation on the phone, but said it ruined his vacation and changed his mind about seeking another term.

Bowen said, "When you do what I do, you need a vacation. In the 15 years I have been the coroner, I have never had a week of vacation, not even a day without answering my office phone 24 hours. I have worked hard to be the best I could be for the taxpayers of Fayette County including training, negotiating bills with vendors, seeking and getting grants, and doing all I could for those who lost loved ones, just to mention a few."

Bowen added, "I have decided not to seek another term as coroner. I would like to thank all who supported me over the past 15 years. My last day as Fayette County Coroner will be November 30, 2016."
