Sexual Assault in Effingham, Suspect Being Sought

Local authorities are investigating a sexual assault that occurred early Sunday afternoon in Effingham.

City police were notified at 12:31pm of the incident, which occurred in the area of Oceola Street and Evergreen Avenue.  City authorities called in Illinois State Police and Effingham County sheriff's deputies K9 units to search the area for suspects and evidence.  9 to 10 officers were on scene in the first minutes after the incident was reported.

The suspect is described as a male, probably white, wearing a green hoodie and blue jeans. Police say the man's face was obscured by the hoodie.
Authorities are looking for information on anybody who might fit the description seen in the area of the assault today or in the previous two days. The female victim was taken for treatment and a support group was contacted to provide additional assistance to the victim. City police can be reached at 347-0771.
