The City of Effingham has been named Google’s 2014 eCity of Illinois, ranking among America’s leading cities in the digital economy.

The eCity Awards, designated by Google, recognizes the strongest online business community in each of the 50 states. According to Google, the awarded cities’ businesses are using the web to find new customers, connect with existing customers and fuel their local economies.

Norma Lansing, Effingham County Chamber of Commerce President said, "Effingham has long been known for its easy access by highway and rail service and its strong business community. Now we can add this eCities of America recognition to the reasons why Effingham is a great place to do business. It is even more meaningful to know that a small rural community like Effingham can compete favorably in the online arena with prior eCities winners like Oak Brook, IL; Scottsdale, AZ; Austin, TX; Albuquerque, NM and New York City. The Chamber is excited to see this recognition of our business community for their innovative and advanced use of technology in operating and growing their businesses."

The Internet plays a critical role in growing our local businesses and the local economies. With 97% of American Internet users looking online for local goods and services, businesses that make use of the web are growing twice as fast and creating twice as many jobs. Mayor Merv Gillenwater said, “The City of Effingham is very proud to be recognized for the relationship we have with our consumers and businesses. This award confirms that this relationships extends beyond physical structures to the digital community.”

A celebration will be held to recognize the City’s innovative businesses at Firefly Grill in Effingham. Kristie Campbell, co-owner of Firefly Grill, said, “Niall and I are thrilled that Google has recognized our exceptional community. Firefly Grill is very excited to help them host this special event. Effingham is a thriving entrepreneurial community and has so much to offer to businesses, families and individuals. We are so grateful to be part of it.”

Congressman John Shimkus, Mayor Merv Gillenwater and Norma Lansing will speak at the invitation-only event.
