An Illinois State Police call center at DuQuoin had glitches with phone lines, causing it to miss some emergency calls.
The state has reduced the number of call centers to four. DuQuoin took on the traffic from Effingham, Carmi and Ullin, and the AFSCME steward in charge of telecommunications workers in DuQuoin says calls were dropped.
Cathy Bencini doesn't believe the system was ready to handle the increased volume of calls. On top of that, she says they were short-staffed with 16 people doing the work of 27. Bencini says they were afraid for the safety of the public and troopers.
