SIGEL — Stewardson-Strasburg won the championship of the Seventh-Grade Boys National Trail Conference Basketball Tournament Thursday.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Stew-Stras defeated South Central, 52-28 in the title contest.<\/p>\n

The winners edged out to a 15-11 opening quarter lead and led 28-17 at halftime. Stew-Stras then had an 18-9 third quarter run.<\/p>\n

Richter led the way with 18 points while Pruemer added 14 and Duncan 12.<\/p>\n

South Central was led by Boehring with 11 and Smith with 10.<\/p>\n

Stew-Stras is undefeated with a 13-0 record.<\/p>\n

In the third placre contest, Effingham Sacred Heart won over Sigel St. Michael, 41-26.<\/p>\n

The consolation championship went to St. Elmo\/Brownstown over Altamont, 34-20.<\/p>\n

At St. Anthony<\/strong><\/p>\n

Effingham St. Anthony and Centralia split victories Thursday evening.<\/p>\n

The Bullpups claimed the seventh-grade game by a 50-20 count. St. Anthony actually trailed 10-7 after the opening quarter but went on a 24-5 second period run and never looked back.<\/p>\n

Nine players scored in the contest for St. Anthony. P. Phillips led the way with 19 points.<\/p>\n

In eighth-grade action, Centralia was a 45-33 winner. Centralia held a 21-18 halftime lead then had a 14-9 third period and finished strong.<\/p>\n

St. Anthony had only player in double figures. B. Verdeyen led the way with 23 points on eight field goals and seven of seven at the line.<\/p>\n

At Mattoon<\/strong><\/p>\n

Effingham and Mattoon picked up a victory each in Thursday evening play.<\/p>\n

Mattoon edged the Mustangs, 30-29 in the eighth-grade game.<\/p>\n

The winners took a 10-8 opening quarter lead and pushed that to 18-12 at halftime. Two three-pointers helped Mattoon to a 7-7 third quarter tie with Effingham who was led by Joel Flack with all seven points.<\/p>\n

Despite the Mustangs coming back with a 10-5 final period run, they fell short.<\/p>\n

Flack led with 13 points while Kaden Rohr added seven.<\/p>\n

In seventh-grade action, Effingham ran out to a 14-7 opening quarteler ad and led 30-13 at halftime and never looked back.<\/p>\n

The Mustangs had two players hit double figures. Deek Thompson led the way with 19 points on eight field goals, two from three-point range, and one of one at the line. Calvin Beck added 11.<\/p>\n

At Newton<\/strong><\/p>\n

Olney was a winner over Jasper County in both games Thursday.<\/p>\n

Olney won the seventh-grade contest, 49-27. Olney held a 21-14 halftime lead then had a 28-13 second half.<\/p>\n

Jacob Guzman led Jasper County with 11 points and was the top rebounder. Alex Keller was named the top defender and Grant Frichtl the top passer.<\/p>\n

In the eighth-grade contest, Olney edged Jasper County, 34-32.<\/p>\n

Olney held an 8-7 opening quarter lead but Jasper County moved ahead 15-13 at halftime. The score was knotted at 21-21 in the third quarter before Olney had a 13-11 final period for the win.<\/p>\n

Chase Kistner led Jasper County with 10 points. Hank Huber was the top rebounder Kistner and Brendan Emmerich were top defenders and Kistner was the top passer.<\/p>\n

Jasper County is 3-9 in seventh-grade and 6-6 in eighth-grade.<\/p>\n
