STRASBURG — Effingham St. Anthony, ranked second in the latest Associated Press girls basketball poll. continued in its winning ways with a 62-34 victory over Windsor\/Stewardson-Strasburg as two National Trail Conference teams met.<\/p>\n

St. Anthony edged out to a 17-13 opening quarter lead on the Hatchets. Nancy Ruholl connected for six points while Lilly Gannaway knocked down a three-pointer.<\/p>\n

Windsor\/Stew-Stras was led by Kendra Hayes with a three-pointer and two baskets for seven.<\/p>\n

But the Bulldogs went into high gear with a 19-8 second period to lead 36-21 at halfitme and had a 20-8 third period run to lead by 27 points heading into the final quarter.<\/p>\n

Adysen Rios went on a run with a three-pointer, a two-pointer and five of six at the line for 10 points in the second quarter. She added on six more in the third period while Gannaway scored five.<\/p>\n

Rios finished with 18 points on five field goals and seven of 10 at the line. The senior also pulled down eight rebounds, had four steals and two assists.<\/p>\n

Also in double figures were Gannaway with 11 and Ruholl with 10. Gannaway went three for three from beyond the arc, had two assists and five steals. Ruholl finished with seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.<\/p>\n

Sophomore Ali Kollman finished with eight rebounds.<\/p>\n

Windsor\/Stew-Stras was led by K. Hayes with 10 points on four field goals and one of two at the line. Samantha Hayes chipped in with nine.<\/p>\n

St. Anthony is 7-1 on the season and will head to Altamont Monday for another National Trail Conference matchup.<\/p>\n

At Effingham<\/strong><\/p>\n

Effingham High School played host to Mount Vernon and suffered its first loss of the season by a 53-50 score Thursday evening.<\/p>\n

Tied for first place in the Class 3A state basketball poll, the Hearts dropped to 6-1 on the season.<\/p>\n

The Rams headed out to a 17-11 opening quarter lead behind the strength of three three-pointers by Josie Shirley.<\/p>\n

The Hearts kept close behind seven points from Sidney Donaldson.<\/p>\n

Effingham came back with a 10-9 second period run to pull within 26-21 at halftime. Donaldson connected on two more baskets and Bella Austin two free throws.<\/p>\n

But the Rams continued on offensively with a 16-10 third period to lead 42-31 going into the final quarter. Kamaree Pollard hit a three-pointer and was three of four at the line for six points.<\/p>\n

The Hearts mounted a comeback in the final period with a 19-11 run only to fall short. Alyssa Martin went on a run, scoring 13 points in the quarter but the Hearts couldn’t get over the 11-point deficit coming into the final period.<\/p>\n

Martin tallied 16 points on five field goals, one from three-point range, and five of seven at the line for 16 points.<\/p>\n

Leading the Hearts was Donaldson with nine field goals, one a three-pointer and one of one at the line for 20 points.<\/p>\n

In the junior varsity contest, Effingham claimed a 61- 51 victory. Four players hit double figures for the Hearts. Mckenzie Love led with 15 followed by Drew Weis 13, Maci Hayes 12 and Melia Wendling 10.<\/p>\n

Brownstown\/St. Elmo, ranked ninth in the Class 1A State Poll, picked up a 55-27 victory over Dieterich as two National Trail Conference teams met Thursday evening.<\/p>\n

BSE took a 12-5 opening quarter lead as Dayana Haslett scored five points and Peyton Barker four. Haslett connected for seven more in the second period 14-6 run as the Bombers led 26-11.<\/p>\n

Madi Miller took over with six points in the third period for BSE and the Bombers pushed their lead to 45-20 going into the final quarter.<\/p>\n

Haslett finished with 25 points on 10 field goals, three of those from beyond the arc, and two of three at the line. Also in double figures was P. Barker with 11.<\/p>\n

Dieterich was led by Addison Miller with 12 points on five field goals, two of those three-pointers.<\/p>\n

BSE is now 7-2 on the season.<\/p>\n

In the junior varsity game, Brownstown\/St. Elmo went overtime to beat Dieterich 30-27. Audria Logue led with 11 points for the winners.<\/p>\n

The Wooden Shoes had three players hit double figures. Chloe Probst led the way with 19 points while Molly Ruholl added 12 and Avery Probst 11.<\/p>\n

C. Probst hit six of 11 from the field  and seven of nine from the free throw line. Probst also led, along with Eva Mette, in rebounds with nine each.<\/p>\n

Kelsey Niemerg led in steals with four and had one assist.<\/p>\n

The two teams were tied at 6-6 after the first quarter. Altamont then broke free with an 11-1 seconder period run to lead 17-7 at halftime. Kylie Osteen connected on five points while Reagan Kuenstler added a three.<\/p>\n

The Indians then had an 8-7 third period edge, only scoring on free throws. Altamont hit seven of 12 with Libby Reardon, Avery Aldrich and Kaylee Lurkins connected on two each.<\/p>\n

Altamont had an 8-7 third period and fought off a challenge by Casey-Westfield in the final quarter.<\/p>\n

Osteen finished with nine points on three field goals and two of six at the line.<\/p>\n

The Cardinals held an 11-4 opening quarter lead and led by a 23-15 count at halftime.<\/p>\n

Neoga still trailed by 40-24 going into the final quarter and mounted a furiouis rally with a 21-8 final period run only to fall short.<\/p>\n

North Clay (2-0 NTC, 4-4) was led by Violet Price with 16 points on six field goals and two of four at the line. Also in double figures was Matia Price with 12 and Sidney Kincaid with 11.<\/p>\n

The Cardinals are back in action Saturday at Effingham in a varsity only contest at 10 a.m.<\/p>\n

Neoga was led in scoring by Brynn Richards with 16 points on six field goals and four of nine at the line and Atalie Osborn with 11. The Indians are now 4-3 on the season and returns to action Monday hosting South Central.<\/p>\n

In the junior varsity contest, Neoga was a 20-12 winner.<\/p>\n

The Bobcats’ Macee Rodman finished with 26 points on seven field goals, three from trifecta land, and nine free throws. Also in double digits was Haley Doty with 17.<\/p>\n

Carissa Wakefield led in rebounds with eight. Doty had six steals and six assists. Rodman also had six assists. Rodman led in blocks with two.<\/p>\n

The Eagles came back with a 16-10 second period to pull within 30-22 at halftime and had an 11-9 third quarter to move within 39-33 going into the final quarter.<\/p>\n

Camryn Martin led Newton with 20 points on eight field goals, two from three-point range, and two free throws. Addy O’Dell added nine points.<\/p>\n

Claire Probst led in rebounds with 10. Karasyn Martin led in assists with six. C. Martin had four steals.<\/p>\n

Newton drops to 4-2 on the season and will be back in action Monday hosting Edwards County (Albion).<\/p>\n

Paris also nabbed the junior varsity win, 53-18. Alani Bergbower led Newton with 12 points.<\/p>\n

South Central had one player in double figures. Kennah Hiestand led the way with 10 points on three field goals, one a three-pointer, and three of four at the line. Perci Reid and Baylee Brown scored nine points each for the Cougars.<\/p>\n
