The family will arrange a private celebration of life at a later date.

Larry was just shy of his 70th birthday on November 21, 1956 (or, as our mother always put it, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving).
He grew up north of Beecher City, Illinois, on the grain and dairy farm his parents, Joseph and Loretta (Doedtman) Schlanser, owned. Number six of nine children, Larry felt comfortable somewhere in the middle, never craving to be the center of attention. On the farm, he did his fair share of milking cows, shoveling manure, driving tractors, and putting up hay.

Larry attended Beecher City Grade School and High School and was recognized by his peers as being a smart kid. He loved playing basketball and gained a reputation for his no look passes and ability to take an offensive charge (and sell it to the referees).

He attended and, after a bit, earned his bachelor’s degree in earth sciences from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. When he was in his 60s he went back to EIU to pick up his diploma.

In addition to spending a short period in Mississippi working for a truck washing company, Larry spent most of his career in construction, including a 5-year stint in Houston.

With several of his brothers and his good friend, Shane Brandt, Larry co-founded Brandt and Schlanser Housing, Inc. The company owned several rental properties in Fayette, Effingham and Shelby counties as well as in other locations.

His most meaningful construction project was building his own cabin home, where he lived for a good portion of his adult life.

By all who encountered him, Larry was known for his gentle nature, as well as for his keen sense of humor. Larry was skilled at noticing the absurdities in life, but always with a humorous and never cruel intent.

He enjoyed watching University of Illinois basketball and Chicago Bears football, often with family and friends. Now and then he liked to fish and play a game of golf, especially for the camaraderie they provided. He enjoyed playing pinochle, particularly with his sister, Marie, brother, Mike, and aunt, Marie Mader, although he could never remember what trump was. Larry was an excellent bee keeper, and would share honey with anyone who wanted it.

His musical tastes leaned toward John Prine and Todd Snider, and Larry counted Kurt Vonnegut among his favorite authors.

Larry was a simple man who lacked a few qualities:

He completely lacked the ability to be disingenuous or phony; Larry was capable only of being his own original self.

He lacked the desire to chase after what society might define as success, although those who knew him recognized his successfulness lay in his desire for simplicity.

Survivors include special friend Lynn Hille and her family, and his siblings: Marie (Ben) Doedtman; Robert (Silvia) Schlanser; Anthony (Tricia) Schlanser; Michael (Rebecca) Schlanser; Susan (Michael) Mumm; Richard Schlanser, and numerous nephews and nieces and their families.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and two older brothers, Steven Schlanser and Charles Schlanser, as well as sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Schlanser and Patricia Schlanser.

Larry was a special man and was beloved by many.
