Effingham High School\u2019s football squad was faced with all three of the above predicaments Friday night at Mater Dei Catholic High School in Breese. The Knights took full advantage, handing the winless Flaming Hearts their most lopsided loss yet by a 45-7 margin.<\/p>\n

In a game heard on 979 XFM and 979xfm.com and kicked off an hour later than originally scheduled due to dangerously high temperatures across the region, EHS (0-3) coughed up a fumble on the second play of the game to give Mater Dei (2-1) the ball just 33 yards away from the Effingham end zone.<\/p>\n

Two more plays later, Knights running back Cameron Von Bokel was running it across the goal line and the tone for the evening was officially set.<\/p>\n

Effingham was down 21-0 before junior tailback Lexton Roberts was able to cap the Hearts\u2019 longest and lone successful drive of the night (12 plays, 80 yards, 5:59) with a three-yard punch-in with 4:38 left until halftime, but just 69 seconds later Mater Dei connected on a 71-yard TD pass from junior quarterback Hunter Hochbaum to junior running back Bodie Brockmeier.<\/p>\n

It was one of five scoring strikes on the night for Hochbaum and one of four TD passes to go for 53 yards or more. Brockmeier and Hunter Nicklin caught two each and Hochbaum\u2019s evening ended at 435 passing yards thanks to plenty of yards after catch from that pair and five other Knight receivers to haul in at least one pass.<\/p>\n

Getting back to how the initial 21-0 deficit materialized \u2026<\/p>\n

The Hearts had stabilized the game a bit and had Mater Dei set to punt from its own 15 with the score still 7-0. That punt appeared to be blocked only for a roughing the kicker flag – Effingham\u2019s ONLY penalty of the night and one the Hearts\u2019 coaching staff clearly found outrageous – to give the Knights new life and the opportunity for Nicklin to find paydirt on a 74-yard catch-and-run just three plays later.<\/p>\n

Then EHS quarterback Jack Hartman threw his second interception of the season to set up a 27-yard field for the Knights; they capitalized the very next play as Hochbaum hit Von Bokel in stride over the middle at the goal line.<\/p>\n

The loss overshadowed easily the best rushing night of the season for EHS. Roberts hit triple digits for the first time this year with 109 yards on 18 touches, while Bryden Kade racked up 64 and change-of-pace QB Jenner Keyes picked up 47 more.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the typically solid passing numbers weren\u2019t there for Effingham. After tallying 298 and 218 yards in the first two games of the season, respectively, the Hearts managed only 34 yards on 14 passing plays.<\/p>\n

Now it\u2019s back to the drawing board for the Hearts as they prepare for their Apollo Conference opener with Charleston; the also-winless Trojans will visit Washington Savings Bank Stadium on Military Appreciation Night at Klosterman Field.<\/p>\n

Even with expanded IHSA playoff fields and six weeks of regular season football left to play, it\u2019ll have a must-win feel for both squads when they kick off at 7 p.m. with a 6:45 pregame show on your home for Hearts football, 979 XFM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
