{"id":45068,"date":"2026-08-25T19:42:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T00:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thexradio.com\/news\/?p=45068"},"modified":"2026-08-25T19:50:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T00:50:19","slug":"two-conditions-newly-eligible-for-treatment-with-medical-cannabis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thexradio.com\/news\/local-news\/45068-two-conditions-newly-eligible-for-treatment-with-medical-cannabis\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Conditions Newly Eligible for Treatment with Medical Cannabis"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"pdfprnt-buttons pdfprnt-buttons-post pdfprnt-top-right\"><a href=\"javascript: window.print()\" class=\"pdfprnt-button pdfprnt-button-print\" target=\"_self\" ><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thexradio.com\/news\/wp-content\/plugins\/pdf-print\/images\/print.png\" alt=\"image_print\" title=\"Print Content\" \/><span class=\"pdfprnt-button-title pdfprnt-button-print-title\">Print<\/span><\/a><\/div><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sickle cell disease and polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome with chronic pain added to list of conditions following advisory board review<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On Tuesday, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced two new conditions have been added to the list of debilitating medical issues that can qualify an Illinois resident for participation in the Medical Cannabis Patient Program.\u00a0 IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra approved the addition of polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) with chronic pain and sickle cell disease after a thorough review by the Medical Cannabis Advisory Board (MCAB) and IDPH staff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Under Illinois law, the Director reviews petition requests to add conditions to the approved list of \u201cdebilitating medical conditions\u201d for which medical cannabis can be used as an approved treatment. The Director considers available scientific analysis and medical literature to determine whether medical cannabis would be an appropriate treatment for each condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cMedical cannabis can provide relief for people living with certain debilitating conditions,\u201d said Director Vohra.\u00a0 \u201cIDPH reviews petitions carefully using expert opinion and the most up to date evidence to make decisions that best serve Illinois residents. We look forward to working with our medical providers to ensure safe, appropriate access for individuals struggling with these newly approved conditions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The two newly-approved conditions are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) with chronic pain<\/strong>. PMOS, formerly known as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), is characterized by hormonal fluctuations that impact metabolism, reproductive health, skin, and mental well-being. Cannabis has been shown to provide relief from the chronic pain associated with the condition.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Sickle cell disease<\/strong>. This condition refers to a group of inherited red blood cell disorders in which abnormal blood cells can lead to extreme pain, anemia, fatigue, swelling, infections, and organ damage.
