{"id":40954,"date":"2026-06-22T16:54:27","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T21:54:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thexradio.com\/news\/?p=40954"},"modified":"2026-06-22T16:54:27","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T21:54:27","slug":"sos-ends-mandatory-road-tests-for-drivers-ages-79-86","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thexradio.com\/news\/local-news\/40954-sos-ends-mandatory-road-tests-for-drivers-ages-79-86\/","title":{"rendered":"SOS Ends Mandatory Road Tests for Drivers Ages 79-86"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"pdfprnt-buttons pdfprnt-buttons-post pdfprnt-top-right\"><a href=\"javascript: window.print()\" class=\"pdfprnt-button pdfprnt-button-print\" target=\"_self\" ><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thexradio.com\/news\/wp-content\/plugins\/pdf-print\/images\/print.png\" alt=\"image_print\" title=\"Print Content\" \/><span class=\"pdfprnt-button-title pdfprnt-button-print-title\">Print<\/span><\/a><\/div><p lang=\"EN-US\">A major component of Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias\u2019 Road Safety &amp; Fairness Act will begin next month with the elimination of the state\u2019s mandatory behind-the-wheel driving tests for Illinois drivers ages 79 to 86.<\/p>\n<p>Starting July 1, the new law raises the age at which Illinois drivers must take a driving test from 79 to 87, removing an outdated age-based requirement that made Illinois the only state in the nation to require a behind-the-wheel test solely because of a driver\u2019s age.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the new law shifts the focus to a person\u2019s ability to drive safely \u2013 rather than the date of their birth certificate, Giannoulias said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Road Safety &amp; Fairness Act is about replacing outdated assumptions with facts,\u201d Giannoulias said. \u201cIllinois seniors have consistently proven they are among the safest drivers on our roads. This law removes an unnecessary burden for older drivers while preserving strong safeguards to protect everyone who travels on our streets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the Road Safety &amp; Fairness Act, drivers ages 79 through 86 will still be required renew their licenses in person at a DMV and pass a vision screening but will no longer be\u00a0required\u00a0to take a behind-the-wheel driving test solely because of their age.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning July 1, renewal requirements will be as follows:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"EN-US\"><strong>Ages 79-80:<\/strong>\u00a0Renew every four years, in person, with a vision test. No driving test required.<br \/>\n<strong>Ages 81-86:<\/strong>\u00a0Renew every two years, in person, with a vision test. No driving test required.<br \/>\n<strong>Ages 87 and older:<\/strong>\u00a0Continue annual in-person renewal with a vision test and behind-the-wheel driving test. These requirements\u00a0remain\u00a0unchanged.<wbr \/><\/p>\n<p>There are approximately 350,000 Illinois drivers between the ages of 79 and 86. Approximately 55,000 of those take a driving test annually. In advance of the law taking effect, the Secretary of State\u2019s office has sent letters to those Illinois drivers whose licenses are up for renewal about the change in the law.<\/p>\n<p>The law does not change requirements for commercial driver\u2019s license (CDL) holders, who must continue taking a behind-the-wheel driving test beginning at age 75 and at each\u00a0subsequent renewal.<\/p>\n<p>Importantly, the law strengthens road safety by creating a new process that allows immediate family members to report legitimate concerns when a loved one\u2019s medical condition, vision impairment or driving behavior may affect their ability to drive safely. Any report is independently reviewed by the Secretary of State\u2019s office and a driver\u2019s license is not automatically affected simply because a report is submitted.<\/p>\n<p>For years, Illinois has been the only state in the nation that requires senior drivers to have their behind-the-wheel skills tested on a regular basis. The last two states that mandated driving tests for seniors did away with them in 2011 (New Hampshire) and 2005 (Indiana).<\/p>\n<p>The changes are supported by extensive safety data. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, drivers age 75 and older had\u00a0a crash rate of\u00a025.54\u00a0per 1,000 licensed drivers\u00a0in 2024\u00a0\u2013\u00a0lower than every age group between 16 and 74.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation also builds on a temporary policy implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic that raised the mandatory road test age from 75 to 79.
