Dano passed away on April 9, 2026, after a short battle with kidney disease.<\/p>\n<p>In honor of Dano, a walk-through will take place from 9:00-10:00 AM Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at the Meyer Funeral Home, 307 West Jourdan Street, Newton, Illinois. The walk-through will serve as a movement of respect and gratitude for Dano\u2019s years of dedicated service, courage, and loyalty. A private burial will be held.<\/p>\n<div id=\":g5e\" class=\"ii gt\">\n<div id=\":g5l\" class=\"a3s aiL\">\n<div id=\"avWBGd-6548\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div>\n<p>Dano\u00a0was\u00a0born\u00a0in\u00a0Slovakia\u00a0on\u00a0June\u00a028,\u00a02012\u00a0and\u00a0began\u00a0his\u00a0training\u00a0to\u00a0become\u00a0a\u00a0Police K9 shortly after. In 2013, he flew to the United States to the Top Dogs Police K-9 Academy in Evansville, Indiana where he would finish his training to be a dual purpose dog. This would mean Dano would be capable of performing patrol tactics such as suspect apprehension, tracking, evidence recovery, as well as the detection of illegal drug substances.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0the\u00a0Fall\u00a0of\u00a02013,\u00a0Officer\u00a0Doug\u00a0Bierman\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Newton\u00a0Police\u00a0Department\u00a0attended\u00a0the Top Dogs Police K-9 Academy and became Dano\u2019s first handler. The two graduated from the K-9 Academy in November of 2013. Immediately after, Dano began his career in serving the City of Newton as an official Officer of the Newton Police Department.<\/p>\n<p>And\u00a0already,\u00a0Dano\u00a0began\u00a0to\u00a0leave\u00a0an\u00a0impact\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0community.\u00a0With\u00a0being\u00a0the\u00a0first\u00a0K9 Unit in the City of Newton, both Officer Bierman and K9 Officer Dano began successfully\u00a0combating\u00a0illicit\u00a0drugs\u00a0and\u00a0assisting\u00a0in\u00a0criminal\u00a0matters\u00a0not\u00a0just\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0City of Newton but also for Jasper County and other agencies. But Dano did more than just assist in the arrests of crimes.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0just\u00a0one\u00a0year\u00a0on\u00a0November\u00a013,\u00a02014,\u00a0Dano\u00a0and\u00a0Officer\u00a0Bierman\u00a0conducted\u00a0a\u00a0track\u00a0on a juvenile who had run away from home in below freezing temperatures. The two both successfully completed the track to find the juvenile, unresponsive, and with signs of onset hypothermia. The juvenile was rescued and was able to be assessed by ambulance personnel. With their combined efforts, Dano and Officer Bierman helped save the life of the juvenile and were recognized by the United States Police Canine Association\u00a0Region\u00a016\u00a0(an\u00a0association\u00a0Officer\u00a0Bierman\u00a0was\u00a0a\u00a0member\u00a0of)\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0Find\u00a0of the 4th Quarter in March of 2015. Just for awareness, this region covered southern Illinois and part of eastern Missouri, housing many other members and K9 units of the\u00a0association.<\/p>\n<p>Together, Officer Bierman and Dano sacrificed their time and safety to keep the community\u00a0safe.\u00a0They\u00a0also\u00a0sacrificed\u00a0their\u00a0time\u00a0in\u00a0training.\u00a0As\u00a0mentioned\u00a0before,\u00a0Officer Bierman was a member of the United States Police Canine Association, or the USPCA. With that, Officer Bierman would train and prepare Dano (and himself) to attend the Regional Patrol Dog Trails with the goal to certify Dano through the USPCA. If Dano was able to pass and score high enough at the Regional Trials then he could attend the National\u00a0K9\u00a0Trials.\u00a0K9\u00a0Units\u00a0from\u00a0all\u00a0over\u00a0the\u00a0Nation\u00a0would\u00a0attend\u00a0these\u00a0trials\u00a0and\u00a0would compete\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0highest\u00a0scores.\u00a0Here\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0list\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0accomplishments\u00a0of\u00a0Officer\u00a0Bierman and Dano during their time participating in the USPCA K9 trials.<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0In 2014 at the Region 16, Regional K-9 Trials in Springfield, IL, Dano placed in 1st place for Obedience.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0In\u00a02015\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0Region\u00a016,\u00a0Regional\u00a0K-9\u00a0Trials\u00a0in\u00a0Charleston,\u00a0IL,\u00a0Dano\u00a0placed\u00a01st place in Obedience, 3rd place in Evidence Search, and 1st place for the Team\u00a0Award.<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Following the Regional Trials, the two attended the National K-9 Trails in Springfield,\u00a0IL\u00a0in\u00a02015\u00a0where\u00a0they\u00a0placed\u00a04th\u00a0in\u00a0Criminal\u00a0Apprehension,\u00a03rd\u00a0in\u00a0the Team Award, and 9th place Overall. Like mentioned before, K9 Units from all over the nation attended this trial.<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0In\u00a02016\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0Region\u00a016,\u00a0Regional\u00a0K-9\u00a0Trials\u00a0in\u00a0O\u2019Fallon,\u00a0Missouri,\u00a0Dano\u00a0placed 1st in the Evidence Search.<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Officer Bierman and Dano lastly attended the 2016 National K-9 Trials in Gloucester\u00a0Township,\u00a0New\u00a0Jersey,\u00a0where\u00a0Dano\u00a0placed\u00a016th\u00a0place\u00a0Overall.<\/p>\n<p>Dano was beginning to be recognized as a well trained and capable K9 Officer. But in the fall of 2016, Officer Bierman left the Newton Police Department to pursue more in his career in Law Enforcement. As for Dano, he stayed with the Newton Police Department and had to switch handlers. Dano\u2019s new partner became Officer Riley Britton. Once again, Dano had to attend the Top Dogs K-9 Academy in the fall of that same\u00a0year\u00a0in\u00a02016.\u00a0But\u00a0this\u00a0time,\u00a0he\u00a0helped\u00a0train\u00a0Officer\u00a0Britton\u00a0to\u00a0be\u00a0a\u00a0handler.\u00a0The\u00a0two graduated together on November 23, 2016.<\/p>\n<p>With that, the two returned to patrol and Dano continued to serve the community of Newton\u00a0with\u00a0his\u00a0new\u00a0handler\u00a0Officer\u00a0Britton.\u00a0Together,\u00a0they\u00a0focused\u00a0on\u00a0drug\u00a0interdiction and keeping the community safe. Dano was able to assist not just the Newton Police Department, but multiple other agencies in the successful finds of illegal substances as well\u00a0as\u00a0suspect\u00a0apprehensions\u00a0without\u00a0ever\u00a0having\u00a0to\u00a0resort\u00a0to\u00a0a\u00a0bite.\u00a0However\u00a0in\u00a02017, Dano met some retaliation. After dealing with a few difficult calls from the day before, Officer Britton went to retrieve Dano to begin an evening shift. Dano did not appear himself and was taken to the Effingham Veterinary Clinic. For 3 days, Dano stayed at the clinic, hooked up to IV\u2019s and needing constant care. It was believed by staff the effects were from rat poison. And due to suspicious circumstances from the night before, it appeared someone purposely had given Dano the poison.<\/p>\n<p>However,\u00a0Dano\u00a0recovered\u00a0and\u00a0he\u00a0continued\u00a0to\u00a0work\u00a0as\u00a0hard\u00a0as\u00a0he\u00a0always\u00a0did.\u00a0He\u00a0also continued to attend the USPCA Trails with Officer Britton. Here are Dano\u2019s accomplishments with Officer Britton during their time together.<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0In\u00a02017\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0Region\u00a016,\u00a0Regional\u00a0K-9\u00a0Trials\u00a0in\u00a0Columbia,\u00a0IL,\u00a0Dano\u00a0placed\u00a01st\u00a0in the Evidence Search and 3rd Place Overall.<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0In 2018 at the Region 16, Regional K-9 Trials in Springfield, IL, Dano placed 1st in Obedience, 1st in Evidence Recovery, 1st in the Team Award, 2nd place in Apprehension, 2nd place in Apprehension with Gun Fire, 2nd place Overall Top Apprehension, 2nd place overall, and 3rd place overall top search.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Dano\u00a0also\u00a0was\u00a0able\u00a0to\u00a0attend\u00a0the\u00a02018\u00a0USPCA\u00a0National\u00a0K-9\u00a0Trials\u00a0in\u00a0Huntsville, Alabama where he was able to compete against 84 other K9 units.<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0As\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0remaining\u00a0years,\u00a0Dano\u00a0did\u00a0not\u00a0attend\u00a0the\u00a02019\u00a0Regional\u00a0Trials\u00a0due\u00a0to the birth of Officer Britton\u2019s daughter in the same week and the COVID-19 shutdowns which halted the trials in 2020 and 2021. However, Dano was still able to certify with the USPCA in Charleston, IL.<\/p>\n<p>Despite\u00a0the\u00a0incident\u00a0in\u00a02017,\u00a0Dano\u00a0remained\u00a0as\u00a0resilient\u00a0and\u00a0as\u00a0dedicated\u00a0to\u00a0serving\u00a0the community as he did when he began. Dano was even able to perform a few more rescues\u00a0in\u00a0his\u00a0career,\u00a0proving\u00a0how\u00a0a\u00a0K9\u00a0can\u00a0be\u00a0used\u00a0for\u00a0more\u00a0than\u00a0just\u00a0criminal\u00a0matters. And after a long and successful career, Dano retired from the Newton Police Department in August of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>For the remaining years of his life, Dano spent his time at the Britton home playing in the backyard with Officer Britton\u2019s son and daughter, being spoiled by Officer Britton\u2019s wife,\u00a0going\u00a0on\u00a0adventures\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0Embarrass\u00a0River\u00a0to\u00a0explore\u00a0the\u00a0woods\u00a0and\u00a0sometimes taking a swim, going on walks, and riding in the back of Officer Britton\u2019s truck for long, patrol-like drives. It wasn\u2019t until March of 2026 that Dano was diagnosed with kidney disease. And with a short battle, Dano passed away on April 9, 2026. But prior to his passing, Dano got one last visit from his previous handler, Officer Bierman.<\/p>\n<p>It is also worth mentioning that the day Dano passed away, the new K9 for Jasper County,\u00a0Diesel\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Jasper\u00a0County\u00a0Sheriff\u2019s\u00a0Office,\u00a0certified\u00a0to\u00a0begin\u00a0working\u00a0drug detection in Illinois to begin where Dano left off.<\/p>\n<p>Dano accomplished many things in his life, from his career as a Police K9, as a partner and attender of the USPCA K9 Trials, and as a member of both the Bierman and Britton family. Officer Britton wanted to give his thanks to first Officer Doug Bierman for being the one who pushed for a K9 Unit in the City of Newton. If it wasn\u2019t for him, Officer Britton would have never got to experience working with Dano and having him be a member of his family. Officer Britton also wanted to thank the Newton Community and the citizens of Jasper County for supporting the K9 Unit, the Newton Police Department and the Jasper County Sheriff\u2019s Office for having Dano\u2019s back, the Newton Animal Health Clinic for their constant donations, the Newton Veterinary Clinic and Effingham Veterinary Clinic for the care they provided throughout his life, the instructors at the Top Dogs Police K-9 Academy, and all the agencies who helped train Officer Britton to be able to use Dano at his fullest potential including Casey Police Department, Charleston Police Department, Coles County Sheriff\u2019s Office, Effingham County Sheriff\u2019s Office, Effingham Police Department, the Illinois State Police, Mattoon Police Department, Moultrie County Sheriff\u2019s Office, Robinson Police Department, and any others who he failed to mention.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Dano was an excellent first K9 Officer for the Newton and Jasper County community, and it is Officer Britton\u2019s hope that he will be remembered for all he had done.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of retired K9 Officer Dano, a loyal and dedicated member of the Newton Police Department in Newton, Illinois from 2013-2021.
